In 1580ish, an unknown artist crafted a oil-on-panel portrait of Elizabeth I, depicting the aging Queen in what had become her standard pose: sitting straight-backed, draped in her finery, clutching a small bouquet of flowers (one of the hallmarks of the "Virgin Queen" iconography).
